Feeling grateful
Having experienced unimaginable trauma, hardship, and despair, DPs who found refuge in Western Australia fleeing the war in Ukraine are deeply grateful for the shelter and the support they received upon arrival. This includes a warm welcome and assistance from their families, the Ukrainian community, settlement support organisations, the Australian government and wider society.
“I was shocked by how much people were helping each other” – one of the participants said.
This also encouraged the DPs to start volunteering themselves.
In the words of the DPs, Australia is like
“another planet” – “even the crows ‘speak’ differently here”.
Settlement takes time and the need for support with language learning, accommodation, education, visas, and employment is ongoing.
Australians are among the people all over the world who stand with Ukraine. Thank you, Australia!

Thank you, Australia, for the opportunity to study English for free in the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP). But it is much easier for younger DPs to study than for older people…. It takes time to learn a language.
Bridges connect. Ukraine and Australia are connected with the bridge of solidarity and support.
A WA farmer and his family have expressed their support of Ukraine in its fight for independence. We met them during our trip to the musical festival in Northam when we saw this yellow and blue fence. Near and far, the support is global!
Everything has its reflection. Let’s treat each other with kindness and be willing to help and empathise. The beautiful nature of Australia reflects kindness in the hearts of people.
Over the ocean there is a blaze of light like the colours of Ukraine. Australia is supporting Ukraine!
Australian hospitality. We got this amazing cake for our first summer Christmas as a sign of support from a woman who didn’t even know us!
There is something that unites many nations: shared holidays. We helped Australians wrap gifts before Christmas.
Volunteering is one of the ways of making our contribution to Australia. I am delighted by this opportunity.
