Having experienced unimaginable trauma, hardship, and despair, DPs who found refuge in Western Australia fleeing the war in Ukraine are deeply grateful for the shelter and the support they received upon arrival. This includes a warm welcome and assistance from their families, the Ukrainian community, settlement support organisations, the Australian government and wider society.“I was shocked by how much people were helping each other” – one of the participants said.
This also encouraged the DPs to start volunteering themselves.
In the words of the DPs, Australia is like“another planet” – “even the crows ‘speak’ differently here”.
Settlement takes time and the need for support with language learning, accommodation, education, visas, and employment is ongoing.
Australians are among the people all over the world who stand with Ukraine. Thank you, Australia!
